GCCI BULLETIN NOV-DEC 2020

14TH JANUARY 2021

Dear Members,

As I write this communication, there is a sense of relief that 2020 has come to an end At last. A year which all of us would prefer to erase out of our memory for it has done, more damage than good to most.

There are definite signs of green shoots seen in the economy across sectors – A case in point is the GST Collection figures for December and the feelers we get from across the sections of Goan businesses is that there are positive signs seen and all seem to be optimistic that probably the worst is behind us.

As usual, the  GCCI secretariat has been very busy pursuing various matters with appropriate authorities details of which you will see elsewhere in this bulletin. Ms. Supatra Sawaengsi, Counsel Commercial of Royal Thai Consulate visited GCCI and there were very productive discussions on possible areas of business opportunities between Goa & Thailand. All our committees were busy too with various matters and interacting with the industry.

The last two months have been unfortunately marred by public protests on some important infra projects. The Tamar power line is the need of the hour. Our Goan Industry, as well as domestic consumers, will suffer if for any reason this project is delayed. We have an ever-increasing demand for power in Goa and our current infrastructure & power supply are just grossly inadequate to meet this demand. So in the interest of the future of the Goan industry let us hope that politics does not get better of development and we have this power line works completed in time.

Similarly the case with double-tracking of the Rail line. This will help Goan’s development and should not be attributed to Coal transportation only. Yes, there are lots of areas of improvement in the way coal is handled & transported in Goa. It is these lacunae that should be addressed and stricter norms put in place & enforced so that pollution is controlled scientifically. In short,  all the infrastructure development projects of Tanmar power line, double-tracking of rain line, Highway, etc are in Goan interest and should not be politicized for petty personal gains by some vested interests. Hope better sense prevails & we all work in unison for the development of our state.

As the Sun rises in 2021, let’s look forward to a shiny new economy where there will be growth for all which will erase the year gone by from our minds.

Wishing you all a very happy prosperous new year 2021.

Best Regards
Manoj M. Caculo
