GCCI BULLETIN AUGUST 2024
August 2024
Nuclear power gets a bad name, often due to the past incidents notably the disasters at Three Mile Island in 1979, Chernobyl in 1986 and Fukushima in 2011. But today, it’s time to rethink. Microsoft’s latest investment in nuclear energy at the infamous Three Mile Island USA shows that we need innovation and stepping up to meet the growing power needs of a world that’s more connected than ever. Yes, safety and environment are always front and centre, but technology has evolved. We now have the know-how to manage risks far better than before. With renewables alone, we cannot meet the demands of a growing digital economy. We need reliable, round-the-clock power, and nuclear offers just that. Growth and life needs more energy. If we want to keep the lights on and power up the next generation of innovations, we need to be bold and open-minded. Saying no to energy production and distribution can starve growth of the energy it needs.
Water is a vital natural resource. It supports human life, as also agriculture, industry, and ecosystems. Its abundant availability is crucial for everyone. Goa’s industries and agricultural sectors depend heavily on both raw and treated water for operations, while communities rely on clean, accessible water for daily needs. Goa must focus on ensuring universal access to clean water and sanitation. Treating water for industrial and domestic use, while preserving natural water sources, is essential for long-term sustainability. Equally important are conservation efforts such as rainwater harvesting, efficient irrigation techniques, and waste water recycling to maintain this precious resource. A collective effort involving all stakeholders is needed.
Corporates can play a pivotal role in transforming Goa into a sporting talent hub by investing in grassroots development, infrastructure, and sponsorship programs. Globally, companies have fostered talent through youth academies and partnerships, contributing to sporting ecosystems in countries like the U.S. and Germany, as also football setups across Europe. In India, support from some businesses has had an impact on sports results, and nurturing Olympic athletes has yielded medals. In Goa, the Government has already created some sports infrastructure.
The Government and corporates should come together to create sports academies, get in the requisite expertise to run these, fund local tournaments, and build high-quality training facilities to complement the sports infrastructure. This will nurture local talent and develop the next breed of talented sports persons who will make their mark at the national and international stage. It will also strengthen the state’s economy by attracting sports persons, and lead to international events and partnerships. As Goa rises as a sporting hub, it will elevate India’s global standing in sports.
We look forward to your continued support for GCCI’s push for infrastructure, policy advocacy and all our events.
Regards,
